Home automation should run on a home server, not in the cloud!

Home automation should run on a home server, not in the cloud!

There are many reasons for this; I will mention a few:
- The internet goes down occasionally. A home server would still fully "serve".
- Confidentiality: anything that's out of the house is "out of the house".
- An encrypted server backup can still be stored in the cloud for fast recovery in case of hardware failure/replacement.
- Remote access from mobile apps can be just as easy.

I think there are many reasons for any automation to stay local (you already covered some); ideally with some remote backup.
- Latency is another reason. Generally "internet" latency is pretty good but occasionally it can get worse. The more we automate about the house, the less we can afford to ignore it.
- Also, as (more) critical systems become automated, therefore "exposed" security becomes essential.
One shouldn't assume that local systems are necessarily more secure than "cloud" based systems if remote access is available; that has to be "earned".
However a local system can still function in isolation; if so desired.
