I agree!
In places where there is no cellular, FM radio could save your life, just like you said!
And entertainment is a big thing, but cellular operators are probably paying phone companies to remove the functionality.

Microsoft has removed the FM radio App from Windows 10 (phone).
Currently many Windows Phones have FM radio chips and Windows came with an FM radio app before Windows 10.
This radio is important in 2 ways:
1. Choice of information and entertainment on the go without paying for data (I think that’s why cellular operators are pressuring manufacturers to remove the FM radios; they want you to have no choice but pay for data)
2. In an emergency the cellular network may fail so the only way to get information may be through radio broadcasts. Lives can be lost for example if people can’t be told where to go or what to do in an emergency situation.

I am also worried this is the first step in removing FM radio capabilities completely, if people don’t ask for the existing chips to be enabled by default.
Cost is NOT really an issue, maybe $2 can be saved by removing the FM radio chip, but a lot can be lost if they do remove them.

A similar problem exists for Android phones and I think the latest iPhones don’t even have the chips anymore.
