New Standard Sockets should be introduced for LED lighting.

Post by CataCluj »

It is time to realize that the current standard Screw Base sockets are bad for the environment when used with LED light bulbs.
The reason is that LED light bulbs have very different heat dissipation needs; they can't do it well through the actual bulb surface.
So most/all LED light bulbs of decent power need heat-sinks (metal fins) to cool down.
When the LED light bulb eventually dies, this extra material might end up in the land fill or at least need (potentially expensive) recycling.
I propose we move the heat-sink into newly designed sockets/fixtures that can take the heat out of the bulb and safely dissipate it into the ambient air.
A secondary benefit is that material savings in the actual LED bulbs can be enormous.
Going a step further, the LED driver circuitry could also be moved into the fixture for even more environmental friendliness (and cost savings).
Features on the bulbs could be read by the fixture/socket to determine bulb specifications and provide it with adequate power while keeping the maximum power safe for the fixture.
Sensors in the fixture could increase safety.

It's a win-win situation.
Changing the sockets will help the environment, and it would be cheaper for the manufacturers!
The only problem would be introducing them, but if they are successfully implemented, It could be a great thing!
